Fresh off dropping his Don’t Forget To Pray (Freestyle), Fred Chijindu Inaks Onianwa known professionally by his stage name Fre-D or Fre-D GoldRush, is back with a track called “Wahala” which was released on his birthday as a ‘gift’ to his hardcore fans. The track was produced by Le Prezident; and represents a genre the duo conceptualized, called ‘Afro-soul-trap’; mixing African elements with soul and trap music. The track title “Wahala” translates to ‘problems’ in pidgin and the track tells a story of how a lady’s predilection for the finer things puts her courter/admirer in trouble. Fre-D uses word play and soul melodies to paint a picture of a young, braggadocios suitor who bites off more than he can chew in courting this particular lady; ‘Caro’. Lines like “No mercy, no mercy, tryna ball when you’re not Messi/No pennies, no panties, guess we’re kettle and pot belly” depict the story from his perspective.
Fre-D, though of Nigerian descent, is based in South Africa where he studies. He cites; Jay Z, Angelique Kidjo, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Oliver de Coque as his major musical influences.
