Predictions (Not Prophecies) Of Events At 20th The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

It has been years of Great music from the early 20’s till now. The journey of Ghana Music has not been a rosy one but thanks to all the artistes, video directors, producers, instrumentalists, event organizers and most importantly Music Enthusiasts and Ghanaians who are always representing Ghana Music at any point in Time. From the days of Agya Koo Nimo, Osibisa, Paabobo, Ampadu up till now , all we should be singing is Daddy Lumba’s “Y3nsei Da” especially as he is the First Artiste to be crowned Artiste of the year in 2000.

It has experienced ups and downs which is expected with every organization or institution but at least we should commend Charter House and everyone who has made this a success for the past 20 years.

It’s here again and is time for Artistes to be rewarded for their hardwork in the year under review. What makes this special is that this the Second decade of VGMA

Let’s take time to enjoy and read through some predictions (not prophecies) of what is expected to happen on Saturday.

Artiste of the year

Last year was an easy battle for Our Queen Ebony Reigns of Blessed memories but we can’t say same for this year… Casting our mind back to the Bisa k. Dei EL battle , it seems there will be a repetition this time between the top-most Skanka From Ashaiman Stonebwoy and The Rockstar From Fadama Kuami Eugene… Shatta Wale, Joe mettle, King Promise and Sarkodie all had a great year but trust me it will be a two horse race…

Stonebwoy the year under review has represented Ghana Internationally by his E.O.M tour , With a lot of international collaboration from beenie man, Sean Paul, Damian Marley , Tailus Railey and a host of others, Talking about hit songs his “kpo keke” is currently the big song in Ghana

Now let’s talk about The Rockstar Kuami Eugene, A young Artiste in his second year in mainstream music has done so well for himself, From Confusion, Wish me well, walaahi and collaboration which all are hit tracks like Strongman’s Baby Girl, Adina’s killing me softly , Adwen fii, and the remix of the famous Kwani Kwani by Tic Tac… He is been on all the major shows and had tours from Sierra Leone to Nigeria to America to Europe

These guys have really worked hard and it will be a battle of extra-time but Kuami Eugene will Carry the Day

Artiste of the Decade

Kojo Antwi’s enviable crown some ten years back will now be given to another artiste… From 2009-2019 Sarkodie has been Ghana’s biggest music commodity, From winning the BET and having 3 nominations which only 2 Africans have been able to do that, The African rapper with the highest YouTube views for a single track (Adonai , getting to 70million views) and most importantly been the Artiste with the most nominations at Vgma and the most awards as well. This award will be the biggest award of the night since is Special occasion for vgma

Highlife song of the year

Judging from the core elements of highlife music, it would have been a two horse race between Dada Hafco’s “Yebewu Nti” and Kumi Guitar’s breakthrough “Betweener” since both of them have all the elements of highlife. But when we add metrics of popularity, impact and votes, it will be a highly contended race which eventually “Killing me Softly” by the soul Singer Adina Thembi will win.

Hiplife song of the year

A bottle of champagne to the godfather Reggie Rockstone for starting a genre which gave us more ears from America, Europe and what have you.
This will be one of the keenly contested categories if not the fiercest. All the nominated tracks have done so well, receiving massive airplay nationwide and love from the streets. Predicting this is as hard as convincing a Muslim to desecrate Ramadan but my bet is on “Obiaa wo ne master” by Pono ft Stonebwoy.

Gosepl Song of the Year

Hallelujah, a new season has come and we have to choose a song which was on the lips of all charismatic and orthodox believers alike. Koda’s hossana with that quality sound always brought smiles and joy to everyone but the song which was played everywhere was I.K. Anning’s most loved “bobolebobo”. The song transcended the pulpit, got on the front page of our newspapers and eventually landed in the club. If it doesn’t win, Charter House will surely hear their “bobolebobo”

Reggae/Dancehall Song of the year

A battle of Shatta/Stone will always be like the World Cup final. Samini’s obaa is also a track no one should underestimate. Given Fancy Gaddam’s penchant for surprises (swoop to win Best New Artiste over Medikal last 2 years), music enthusiasts will have to include maccassio also representing the north to make this a tight race. However, we tip Gringo to take the honours.

Afropop Song of the Year

If it was a Battle between Africans and other continents I would have been biased about this since Afro-pop is our music identity out there.

As part of our 20th celebration we say “AKWAABA” (Guilty beatz ft Mr eazi, Pappy Kojo, patapaa) to GHANA a land of Cocoa, Gold, Rich culture and great music and dance as well

Hip-hop Song of the Year

From the 2pacs, The Christopher Wallaces, Nasty Nas, Jay Z to the Rockstones, the Obrafours, Jay D of Alampan fame, Kwaw Kesse, Sarkodie and a host of the artistes holding this genre down there is only One question a Ghanaian keep asking – “HOW MUCH“ remix ft Sarkodie & Omar Sterling

Gospel Artiste of the Year

An award that has been dominated by the “bo no ni” hit-maker Joe Mettle for sometime now I think for this time will be in the pride of Diana Hamilton a daughter of the Late Apostle F.E. Antwi of Pentecost Fame…Having been on almost all renowned gospel shows and having two nationwide hits “MO NE YO” and “WORK IN PROGRESS “ it puts her slightly ahead of KODA who will be her greatest contender. It will be up to Joe Mettle to prove his mettle once again.

Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year

Stonebwoy winning it four times in a row might have his fifth on the 18th of May…Touring around the world with the biggest of collaborations from Sean Paul to Beenie man to Tailus railey to Damian Marley…Having about 4 or 5 hit songs from most original which is a global hit, kpo keke, and son…With this reasons Stonebwoy is in the lead of winning this award for the 5th consecutive time. We hope it won’t become a “comfortable lead”

Highlife Artiste of the Year

The three K’s , Kuami Eugene, Kidi, King Promise had an amazing year from bangers to been on shows nationwide and outside Ghana. However, highlife has an identity and one chap who is really maintaining that Identity is Gladstone Akwaboah Junior. Having one of the best highlife albums and albums in general this year, been on some notable shows, been on some features for a banger like blow my mind by Flowking, Akwaboah is set to carry that award but don’t be surprise if any of the three k’s pick it too.

Songwriter of the year

Let’s not talk much about this, all the songs there are well written…Akwaboah’s “Hye me bo” would have had a fierce competition if Strongman’s Vision was nominated… It is a win for Akwaboah

Record of the year

It seems trigmatic has a special focus on this nomination, always bagging nomination in this category … This will also be a hard one but Fuse has the upper hand with that nice production, quality product and as usual his pan-Africanism on “bra fie”

Video of the Year

A very tight one too…Gringo has won quite a number of awards in the video category. Personally, if I’m to choose I will give it to “Up and awake”. That was a nice concept and visuals representing aspects of black African history from the Pen and Paper boys but I think on Saturday, although Gringo has been winning in the video Category, Biiba ba by Sarkodie will emerge victorious.

Hiplife/ Hiphop Artiste of the Year

Hiphop was one of the sick genres in Ghana and Medikal had to treat it…From playing all the shows, Having all the bangers like how much, Ayekoo, wrowro ho, omo ada …This is an award for medikal to lose.

Male Vocalist of the Year

We all know mugeez should have been in this category…. Akwaboah has done so well for himself this year and he has been a man of vocals since time immemorial but this time King Promise will deny Akwaboah of winning this category.

Female Vocalist of the year

To our soul singers who always makes gangsters fall in Love, you are doing a GOD Sent work…This would have been a straight win for Efya some time back but Adina changed that perception. All nominees have given us sweet melodies but Efya will take back her throne she lost to Adina.

Group of the Year

La meme gang and Dope nation have really announce their presence with some good tunes this year… It would have been a boost for one of them to win but honestly R2Beees deserves this award from “We Dey Vibe” to their worldwide tour to the Golden SITE 15 Album

Best Rapper

This was suppose to be the year of STRONGMAN but we all still don’t know why he was not in this category. Now let’s focus on the nominees. The shouts and rants might be on the side of Medikal but Sarkodie will carry the day.

Collaboration of the year

The connection and communication in a well collaborated track is not something you can over-look. All these tracks had these two strong factors. CCTV by king promise will stand out…The soothing voice of King Promise with the entry of the hook and vocal god mugeez and the Content-Conscious rap of Sarkodie shows how it was well collaborated in terms of communication and makes it stand out, There was no point where there was a deviation in this track.

African Artiste of the Year

This category does not mean the Ghanaians are not Africans but it means Africans who are not Ghanaians.
It will be a tight one but looking at the way Burna Boy has been in the news and stand out from tours to tracks he is likely to carry the day.

Best New Artiste of the Year

One of our prestigious awards since every parent is very conscious about the way he will train his offspring because these are the future of GH music.
Kelvin bwoy had an amazing year but you don’t need prophecy to tell you that Wendy Shay has all the bangers from “Uber driver” to “Psalm 35” to “Masakra” to “Astalavista” and has been in all the news and Shows…This is the official Launching of the Wendy Shay brand

Most Popular Song of the year

I will go for Kpo keke , since it’s release it has been on top of almost all the entertainment charts from citi, joy, luv fm and is the biggest anthem on the street right now, There is no social function you will go and you won’t hear kpo keke

Album of the year

If not for The Late Ebony’s Bonified winning last year as against the 8th billboard Stonebwoy’s epistles of mama I would have say is a no competition for shatta’s reign which was 6th on Billboard

Since I can use that as a basis I would throw my weight behind Akwaboah’s MOTH album…It might not be the album with the hit tracks since we don’t know Akwaboah for that, All entertainment pundits and music fanatics for some time beloved the quality in the production and composition of this Album makes it the best the year under review

Producer of the year

Big names like kaywa and killbeatz have dominated this award over the years…This time Is MOG beatz time , Dude has been on all production of a lot of bangers and nice tunes

Instrumentalist of de year

Mister okyere stands tall amongst these talents…This is the de guy who played the sax for Samini and Sarkodie on last year Vgma…There is always a standing ovation by Crowd when the Young man From Fumesua in Kumasi performs

Best African Collaboration

All the nominees will just tell you one thing when they see you on Saturday
That’s

AKWAABA to the The 20th edition of GHANA MUSIC AWARDS
