Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi has claimed the Miss Universe crown ahead of Miss Puerto Rico.

Zozibini wowed the judges with her natural stage presence and winning smile as well as her proudly South African fashions.

The first contestant to progress to the top twenty, Zozibini did not falter once and made South Africa so very proud at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Zozibini’s evening gown was worth the price of admission and as soon as she walked out on that stage she was the favourite to snatch the crown.

Miss South Africa radiated confidence on stage that comes from being at home in her own skin.

Miss Universe added an extra element to the final three following up the final question with the final statement.

When asked what the most important thing we need to be teaching young girls today, Zozibini told host Steve Harvey: “I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It is something that has been lacking in young girls and woman for a long time. Not because we don’t want to but because of what society has labelled women to be. I think we are the most powerful beings on the world and that we should be given every opportunity. That is what we should be teaching these young girls. To take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself.”

Following up her superb response to the final question where Zozibini stressed the importance of empowering girls to become the leaders of tomorrow, she knocked the final statement out of the park.

“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair was never considered to be beautiful, and I think it is time that that stops, today. I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine,” Zozibini said moments before being crowned Miss Universe 2019.

Zozibini Tunzi is the third Miss South Africa to claim the Miss Universe crown and she succeeds Catriona Gray of the Phillipines who took the crown in 2018 ahead of runner-up Tamaryn Green.
