Tyla’s Joyful Reaction to Historic First Grammy Award Nomination

South African Afropop sensation Tyla has marked a historic moment in her career by securing her maiden Grammy Award nomination, a milestone that she joyously celebrated on social media.

The Recording Academy recently unveiled the complete list of nominees for the 65th edition of the Grammy Awards, set to take place on February 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Tyla received her first-ever nomination in the esteemed ‘Best African Music Performance’ category.

Taking to Twitter to express her excitement, Tyla exclaimed, ‘No Waysss,’ capturing the disbelief and thrill of her incredible achievement. The Recording Academy introduced three new categories for the 2024 GRAMMYs, including Best African Music Performance, acknowledging the global impact of African artists.

Tyla’s breakout hit, ‘Water,’ has been on a remarkable journey since its inception. The track made history by becoming the first solo song by a South African musician to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years, following jazz legend Hugh Masekela’s ‘Grazing in the Grass.’

‘Water’ further climbed to the top spot on the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, ending the 58-week reign of Rema & Selena Gomez’s song “Calm Down.” The song’s international success has also made Tyla the first South African artist to amass 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify within the African music folder.

With the addition of the inaugural category for Best African Music Performance, Tyla faces stiff competition from industry giants like Burna Boy, Davido, Olamide, and others. The inclusion of Tyla in this esteemed list cements her status as a rising star with global recognition.
