Coronavirus: Here are the Punishments for Flouting the Lockdown
The President announced during the address on the state’s anti-coronavirus on Friday, March 27 that some urban areas in the country will be restricted from Monday for two weeks as part of government measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.
The lockdown affects areas in Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi, where significant numbers of infections have been recorded.
The lockdown will restrict the movement of people for a period of two weeks subject to review. The President directed during Friday’s address that people in the affected areas can only go out to get essential times such as food, conduct banking transactions or use the public toilet.
However, anybody caught flouting the imposed restrictions without any valid reason will be fined or jailed.
By section 6 of the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012), the minimum punishment for flouting the restrictions/lockdown announced by the President is a fine of GHc 12,000.00 or a prison term of 4 years or both. These are the minimum punishments so we advise our cherished readers careful and not fall foul of the law.
